    Create and publish a skill

Turn a folder of instructions into a skill, publish numbered versions from its home, and move or delete it when things change.

    Make a skill#

A skill starts as a folder in a workspace. That workspace becomes the skill's home.

    1. In a workspace you can edit, create a folder under skills, for example skills/compare-rate-sheets. Use lower-case letters, digits and dashes for the name.
    2. In that folder, create SKILL.md. Start it with a header that has a description, then write the instructions. You can ask the agent to draft it from work already done in the workspace.
    3. Open More actions in the workspace's left bar and choose Make this a skill.
    4. Enter the folder's name and, if you like, a display name. Click Make it a skill.

The skill now appears under Managed here in the workspace's Skills view, as a draft.

Making a skill creates no new workspace, copies nothing and publishes nothing. An ordinary workspace or a service's workspace can be a home. An engagement's workspace cannot.

    The draft#

The home holds the draft in the skill's folder. Edit it like any other file, or have the agent edit it.

The home's own agent uses the draft as it stands, so a change takes effect on its next turn without publishing. This is how you try a change out. No other workspace sees a draft.

    Publish a version#

    1. In the home, open Skills and click the skill under Managed here.
    2. Click Publish. The button shows the next version number.

You see a confirmation with the version number and the number of files. Every workspace that uses the skill is offered the new version.

    • A published version never changes. To change a skill, edit the draft and publish again.
    • If nothing has changed since an existing version, nothing is published and you are told which version matches.
    • Skills that share a home are published separately.
    • Cases and the track record never block publishing.
    • If the skill requires a review before publishing and you are not one of its owners, your publish is sent for review. See Skill reviews and owners.

The Versions list in the skill's tab shows every version, newest first, with when it was published. Who published, under Skill reviews, names the person.

A version contains everything in the skill's folder. Cases and notes are kept beside the skill in its home and are never part of a version.

Ask the agent to improve a draft#

In a conversation in the skill's home, describe what went wrong. For example:

    Example
The invoice-with-credit-note case failed. Fix it without breaking the others.

The agent reproduces the problem using the case, edits the draft, runs the cases, and reports back in a table: for each case, the result on the published version and on the draft, and whether it was fixed, still failing or made worse. Under the report it offers the Publish button. Publishing is your decision.

The agent publishes for you only when you ask for it in your own message, for example "Looks good, publish it." If the skill requires a review and you are not an owner, that request raises a review instead.

Move a skill to another home#

    1. In the skill's tab, click Move skill to….
    2. Choose the destination and click Move skill.

You need edit access to both workspaces. The draft moves; the versions, cases, track record and owners follow the skill. The workspace it left keeps using the latest published version as a pin.

A skill cannot be moved while one of its cases has unsaved edits or its cases are being run.

    Delete a skill#

Click Delete skill in the skill's tab and type the skill's folder name to confirm. You need to be the owner of the home workspace, or an organization admin.

    • The skill leaves the library, and nobody can pin it any more.
    • Workspaces that already pin it keep their copies. The copies keep working and receive no more versions.
    • The files stay in the home as ordinary files.

    Archive or delete a home#

Archiving or deleting a workspace that is the home of skills affects everyone who uses them, so you are warned and shown each skill with the number of workspaces that pin it.

    If the home isIts skills
ArchivedStay in the library. Pins elsewhere keep working. Nothing can be changed, published or moved until the workspace is restored.
DeletedWorkspaces that pin them keep their copies, at the version they were on, and receive no more versions. Restoring the workspace before its files are removed brings the skills back.

From the warning you can move one skill, move them all to a new workspace, delete a skill, keep the workspace, or go ahead without moving anything.

A pin whose skill no longer has a home is marked No home. It keeps working as it is.

    Limits#

    • A skill's folder name can be up to 64 characters and its display name up to 80.
    • A skill can hold up to 5,000 files, each up to 100 MB.
